BIOGRAPHY
Elliot Erwitt (born in 1928) grew up in Milano and Paris. In 1939 he immigrated to the United States with his family. He studied at the Los Angeles City College and worked in a photography laboratory during WWII.
In 1948 Erwitt moved to New York City where he met the renowned photographers Edward Steichen and Robbert Capa. In 1953 Erwitt began working for MAGNUM. One year later he became a full member of the agency. In 1966, Erwitt was appointed to the presidency of Magnum and remained in that position for three years, until 1969.
Elliott Erwitt became well known for his black and white candid shots of ironic and absurd situations within everyday settings – the master of the ‘indecisive moment’.
